After obtaining my Ph.D. in mathematics from Vanderbilt University, I worked at Nichols Research Corporation in Huntsville, Alabama from 1986 to 1989.  After that, I moved to Western Kentucky University and served 19 years.  I joined the faculty at Belmont in the fall of 2008.  I love being here and being part of the Christian tradition of Belmont and its devotion to students. I believe God brought me to Belmont and wants me to share the mathematical skills he gave me with others, and it is a joy to do so.

My research interests are in differential equations, and anything related to differential equations, such as measure theory and set-valued analysis.  I've taught most every course in the standard college mathematics curriculum, from remedial mathematics up to directing master's theses.  It doesn't matter to me as long as it's math!

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife Christy, our little dog Sophie and our two rabbits, Maggie and Joey.  I like reading non-fiction, following the Oakland Athletics, following the stock market and trying to be healthy and fit.

I joined the Belmont faculty in 1997 teaching courses in graph theory, discrete mathematics, statistics and more recently mathematical inquiry and an introduction to computer science. My educational background is varied having a B.A. in religion from Samford University followed by graduate studies in theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. A love for teaching led me back to mathematics in which I have my M.S. from Georgia State University and Ph.D. from Emory University. I taught three years at Wake Forest University before coming to the Mathematics and Computer Science department at Belmont.

Among my favorite pastimes is working with students and other faculty, learning together through research projects (and other diversions). Although my primary expertise is in graph theory, I have a great interest in projects that bring together multiple disciplines (mathematics, computer science and biology ... among others).

When I'm not at Belmont, life revolves around my family. A busy schedule with two sons in college, two dogs, church and family activities keeps life exciting for my wife and me.

I came to Belmont in the fall of 2005.   I received my M.S. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and did my dissertation work in the area of operator theory.   Before going to Vanderbilt, I received my B.S. from Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.   I’ve lived in a variety of places including Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.   Previous to coming to Belmont I lived in Naperville, IL (outside Chicago) where I taught at North Central College. 

Professionally I am an active member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and a Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) Fellow.   I have attended workshops and conferences around the country including the Park City Math Institute.   In Park City I was able to learn all about geometric combinatorics – a fascinating area that combines geometry with the theory of counting.

I am delighted to be joining the Belmont University Department of Mathematics and Computer Science as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education. Prior to my arrival at Belmont, I was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at the Abington campus of Pennsylvania State University, teaching both mathematics and mathematics education courses. While at Abington, I was honored to be selected to be a fellow in Service, Teaching, and Research in Mathematics Education, a program to support early-career mathematics education professors. Before Abington, I earned my Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia. I earned my Master of Education degree—also in mathematics education—from UGA. Before the start of my graduate school career, I was a high school mathematics teacher in Marietta, Georgia. I received a Bachelor of Science with Honors degree from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, with a major in Mathematics and minors in Secondary Education and History.

My research interests lie in the specialized knowledge for teaching mathematics at the school level. At Abington, I looked at how pre-service elementary teachers developed their knowledge of mathematics and teaching mathematics throughout their preparation as teachers. At UGA, I explored how secondary mathematics teachers applied their knowledge of mathematics and pedagogy in their regular classroom interactions with students, with a particular interest in classrooms with accelerated mathematics curricula. My hope is to continue both lines of inquiry while at Belmont. I invite any interested student to work with me in my research! In addition to my own work, I also supervised undergraduate research projects at Penn State-Abington that look quite different from my other work. I am glad to talk about that work with anyone!

Because I devote a lot of time, effort, and passion into my job, I claim not to have much free time. However, in the downtime I do have, I do enjoy a good trivia contest! As a fan of collegiate and professional sports, I look forward to watching many games involving teams from around the area!

I am a 2017 graduate of the University of Mississippi with a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Engineering Science with an emphasis in Computer Science. While at the University of Mississippi, I served as a graduate instructor and Turning Technologies intern. My prior educational background includes a M.S. degree in Computer Science from Jackson State University and a B.S. degree in Computer Science from Mississippi Valley State University. I am a former McNair, Mississippi Space Grant (JPL) Consortium, LSMAMP-Bridge to the Doctorate, DOE Mickey Leland Energy and Southern Regional Education Broad (SREB) Fellow.

Student engagement is at the core of my teaching. In an era where self-expression is limited to 140 characters, emoji’s and hashtags; an instant connection is needed to provoke student interest. As a result, my goal within the classroom is to help facilitate open communication and promote a comfortable learning environment for students with a myriad of diverse backgrounds.

I am excited for the opportunity to become an integral member of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont, where I can devote my skills wholeheartedly to help cultivate student’s ideas, encourage their originality and challenge them to excel.

My research interests include: wireless video sensor networks, algorithm optimization, software engineering and embedded systems. For current undergraduate research projects, I am particularly interested in the computer network areas; such as wireless sensor and mesh networks, cyber physical systems and Internet of Things (IoT).

Upon graduation from Belmont in 1982 with a B.S. in Mathematics, I accepted a four-year commission into the Navy to teach Mathematics, Chemistry, Materials, and Radiological Fundamentals at the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School.   I was then selected to fill a position in Crystal City, VA as a Naval Reactors Security Project Engineer.    After meeting and marrying my husband, a Marine Corps officer, we moved to Okinawa, Japan for 3 years where, while completing an M.S. in Educational Leadership from Troy State University, I taught Math and Science at a Missionary school, GED courses at an Air Force Base, and Algebra for the University of Maryland.   We then moved to Oklahoma City, where I taught and received an M.S. in Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma.   Since moving back to Tennessee, I have taught four years for Columbia State and, since 2002 (part-time at first), for Belmont University.   I mostly enjoy teaching courses that allow me to demonstrate to students the practical applications of mathematics.   I also enjoy reading crime mysteries, jogging, and playing piano.   My husband and I, along with our two children and dog, “Buddy,” currently live in Spring Hill.

I joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont University in 2001.  I earned both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky; my research was in the field of Complex Analysis. I also have an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a B.A. from Rhodes College.

I began my professional career at Buckman Laboratories International where I became a Vice President and the manager of the Human Resources, Strategic Planning, and Legal departments. However, I never forgot my dream of becoming a college professor, and I returned to school in my thirties to pursue that goal. Teaching at Belmont University was my first full-time academic position.

With my background in Analysis, I particularly enjoy teaching calculus and analysis. I frequently teach Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Inquiry and I relish the opportunity these courses give me to broaden as well as deepen students’ mathematical knowledge. In the past few years I have had the pleasure of studying Graph Theory and Network Science.

Away from Belmont I am very active at Donelson Presbyterian Church. I also love nature and spend a week in a different national park each summer. At home I enjoy reading, gardening, and playing with my two cats.

I joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont University in the fall of 2013. Previously, I held a post doctoral/assistant professor position at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS.  My area of research is functional analysis. In 2011, I was awarded the Davies Fellowship from the National Research Council at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD.  The objective of my research is to design an algorithm to enhance stereoscopic imagery so that it is adapted to the viewing distance of the observer, with seamless transitions among stereo and hyperstereo levels.

I am involved in outreach and mentoring organizations like the Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM at the United States Military Academy, Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE), Career Mentoring Workshop (CaMew), Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), and National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

I have participated in professional conferences and workshops such as: Promoting Diversity at the Graduate Level in Mathematics: a National Forum Workshop at Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) Research Experiences for Undergraduate Faculty,Workshop for Mentors of Undergraduate Mathematics Research by Minority Students, and Park City Math Institute.

I enjoy working with students inside and outside the classroom.  I believe students sometimes dislike mathematics because their first encounter with math failed so they just have no real interest in learning more math. I like to provide my students with more opportunities to positively experience math and stimulate further interest in this study.

I am a Tennessee native, with a diploma from Gallatin High School in 1975 and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1988. (An A.B. from Dartmouth College, in 1979, was mere youthful wandering.) I taught my first course at Belmont in 1988, and after a year at The MITRE Corporation (more wandering) I settled in to build my career here. I love teaching at Belmont because I love middle Tennessee, I love learning along with my students, and I love working among the kind and decent people here.

My doctoral research was in performance evaluation, a reflection of my continuing fascination with the way machines interact with people and with each other. Following the needs and interests of my students, I have developed moderate competence in computer architecture, operating systems, graph theory, combinatorics, and artificial intelligence, and moderate hypertension* maintaining a zoo of Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers.

In 2011, I joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont University.  Originally from Clarksville, Tennessee, I earned my Bachelor of Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. While pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I worked as a Co-Op student for Georgia Power Company in Atlanta and after graduation worked as an Engineer with South Central Bell in Nashville.  I returned to academics to earn my Master of Science in Statistics and Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where I taught undergraduate courses in Management.  My dissertation research involved mixed-model assembly line sequencing in a build-to-order environment.

Early in my teaching career I was a professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Memphis for four years.  I have also consulted to help streamline operations in industries.  My teaching experience is in Operations Research, Probability Models, Elementary Statistics, Mathematical Inquiry, and Mathematical Reasoning. 

I truly love teaching and math.  The students, faculty and staff at Belmont are inspiring and I enjoy my job tremendously.  When not at Belmont, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Marty, and twin daughters, Holly and Emily, at our home in Franklin.  We are a family active in sports, school activities, the outdoors, and our church.

I have been a member of the Belmont mathematics and computer science faculty since 2003.  I have a B.A. in mathematics and physics (with computer science and philosophy minors) from Wartburg College (IA) and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. My dissertation research is in the field of hyperbolic dynamical systems. Additionally, I am actively involved in curricular development that focuses on quantitative literacy and on issues that lie in the intersection of mathematics and social justice.

I teach a wide variety of courses here at Belmont, ranging from one of our BELL Core courses (Mathematical Inquiry) all the way through calculus to our upper-division proof-intensive courses. I'm also the co-advisor of our math and computer science student organization, the joint Student Chapters of the Mathematical Association of America and the Association for Computing Machinery.

Outside of school I enjoy singing in the choir at Belmont United Methodist Church, running (all distances, from 5K to marathon), and reading, when I have the time.  I chose to study mathematics because I find it fun and fascinating, so I also have fun by keeping up with my discipline and solving puzzles and riddles of all kinds.

I joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont University in 2011. I was born in Larnaca, a small town on the southern coast of Cyprus, and my native language is Greek. I earned my Bachelor's in Pure Mathematics from the University of Cyprus in 2004. I then moved to West Lafayette, Indiana, to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Purdue University. The main focus of my research is on Composition Operators on Spaces of Analytic Functions, a beautiful area of mathematics that marries the fields of Functional Analysis and Complex Analysis.

While at Purdue, I worked as a teaching assistant for six years, which gave me the chance to teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, and helped me discover my passion for teaching. I really enjoy working with students, sharing my knowledge with them, and helping them appreciate the beauty of mathematics. Being able to do that at such a wonderful place as Belmont, while being a part of such a warm and caring department, is a major blessing for me - I love everything about my job! When not working, I have fun playing with my two kitties, Frisky and Colby, reading inspirational books, and learning about living and eating healthy. I also very much enjoy listening to music and going to concerts as well as other live music events, so needless to say I love living in Nashville.

I have been a faculty member at Belmont since 1989.   In my years at Belmont, I have had several other positions in addition to serving as a faculty member.   From 1998-2002, I was Associate Dean for the School of Sciences.   I served as Director of the Teaching Center from 2003-06.  During the 2007-08 year, I was interim dean for the College of Arts and Sciences.  In addition to regularly teaching general education mathematics courses (which fulfill the quantitative reasoning component of the BELL Core) and the upper-level Combinatorics course, I teach Math Analytics for students in the Honors Program and a First-Year Seminar course that focuses on issues related to limitations (including disabilities). 

My post-secondary degrees include a B.A. from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, an M.Ed. in College Student Personnel Work from the University of Mississippi, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University (graph theory was my Ph.D. thesis area).

My professional interests include quantitative reasoning across the curriculum, discrete mathematics, and the pedagogy of mathematics instruction.  I'm also involved with several mentoring programs at Belmont:  I serve as Director of the Mentoring for Mission program for 2^nd-year faculty members and their mentors and I informally serve as a mentor for faculty members who are teaching First-Year Seminar for the first time.

I am married to Robbie Pinter, Professor of English at Belmont. Our son Nicholas attends high school at Benton Hall Academy in Williamson County.  We have a Wheaten Terrier puppy named Annabelle.   My interests include being a sports fan (especially St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Tennessee Titans football), reading, working in our yard and garden, and work with our church.

I am most passionate about challenging my students to better themselves; in my class, we will be accountable to each other in our efforts to push our knowledge and understanding.

I received my Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and did my dissertation work in representation theory – mainly focusing on Clifford and Lie algebras and superalgebras.   Before going to UWM, I received my B.A. from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI, and I also spent time teaching at the secondary level.  Professionally I am an active member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and a Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) Fellow. 

Although my primary expertise is with noncommutative algebras, I have great interest in projects that bring together multiple disciplines (other branches of mathematics, physics, computer science, and sociology).  On the pedagogy side of my research interests, I study teaching methods that most effectively build conceptual understanding and mathematical confidence.

I received my B.S. in Mathematics (with an accompanying minor in Chemistry) from Belmont in 2009. Following the completion of my B.S., I spent seven years at the University of Kentucky, completing my Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and working as a Biostatistician in two of the university’s statistical consulting units. In my work as a Biostatistician, I worked with projects ranging from nanoparticle toxicity to violence against women to medical student education and beyond. During my time in Kentucky, I taught statistics and mathematics classes at four different universities as a teaching assistant and/or adjunct professor. Following the completion of my Ph.D., I returned to Belmont to teach.

My primary teaching and research interests are in the area of Applied Statistics. I enjoy helping students and researchers understand their data and interpret the story it tells. I particularly enjoy working with large datasets and data from designed experiments. I find the topic areas of women’s health, minority health outcomes, and maternal/child outcomes highly fascinating.

I am excited to be teaching at Belmont. I love helping students learn the language and concepts of statistics and mathematics and particularly enjoy working with students in one-on-one situations or in small groups.

I believe that all students can learn mathematics when given opportunities to do so. Since no student will come to my class with a blank slate where mathematics is concerned, I strive to provide learning opportunities that foster each student based on their intellectual diversity and background. I am passionate about helping each and every student see the beauty and wonder in mathematics by engaging students in a positive, creative learning environment through communication, discussion, and reflection.

I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Middle Tennessee State University. Broadly, my research focuses on developing preservice and inservice teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching through mathematics content courses and professional development activities.  Through my dissertation, I focused on examining elementary preservice teachers’ conceptions of the nature of mathematics and how these conceptions can support or hinder their development as an educator.

In addition to preservice teachers, I am also interested in the longitudinal exploration of students’ and mathematicians’ conceptions of the nature of mathematics and how these conceptions might influence mathematics as a discipline.

I joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont University in 2019. Previously, I was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, focused on developing informatics tools to facilitate the clinical trial recruitment workflow. I received my M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University with my dissertation centered around the development of software architectures to improve the exchange and use of healthcare data.

The research topics I am interested in include model-driven design for engineering and healthcare IT systems, intelligent model constructions using machine and deep learning, decentralized algorithms and protocols for facilitating and securing clinical communications, and the design of architectures and informatics tools to facilitate patient-centered care.

My prior work on FHIRChain, which is a blockchain-based architecture for enabling secure and scalable healthcare data sharing, has been cited by 100+ scholarly works and was covered by HealthDataManagement, BeckersHospitalReview, HCANews, and several other media outlets.

I received my B.S. degree from Belmont University and had an enjoyable time here as a student and continue to enjoy the campus as a staff member.   The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is a special and caring place within the University. I enjoy working with my colleagues as we serve our students each day. I view my work as one way to live out my Christian faith in service to God and others!

My husband and I enjoy spending time with family and friends.We also enjoy Christian music and lots of sports!

I joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Belmont University as a part time adjunct instructor and transition to fulltime lecturer in 2015.  I was born in Romania, specifically Transylvania, and my native language is Romanian. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oradea in 2007. I then moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to complete my Ph.D. in Mathematics at University of Memphis. The main focus of my research is on partial differential equations and my thesis title is: Wentzell Boundary Conditions with General Weights and Asymptotic Parabolicity for Strongly Damped Waves.  Growing up in a different country and culture and moving across the globe would test anyone’s abilities and beliefs.  I chose to take a leap of faith and uprooted my entire life to further my education so I would be better equipped to help our future generations learn and grow. Since I have transitioned from a different culture and country, I can use my experience to show students how to overcome adversity through perseverance and determination.  While teaching and learning at the university level, I have gained valuable experience from my professors, my advisors and from teaching my classes.  I take great satisfaction when my students grasp new concepts and expand their knowledge base and I believe that an understanding of mathematics is extremely important for the success of future generations. I love working with numbers and helping students discover patterns and methods that will lead to their success in many branches of mathematics.  I feel confident that I can positively affect my students by showing them how staying disciplined in their studies and in their faith can transform the world around them.

When not working, I have fun spending time with my family.  We love to build LEGO’s, puzzles, read, play games and enjoy outdoor activities.

My first experience with Belmont University was the String Crossings summer orchestra camp while in high school, and I decided that I loved the campus so much that I came here for my undergraduate degree. Although I had intended on focusing a lot of my attention on music, I couldn’t ignore my other passion in mathematics. In between all the practicing and writing a musical for my honors thesis, I spent a lot of time working for Belmont’s Math and Science Tutoring Center, tutoring students in both math and physics. From this, I realized a great love of teaching and a desire to assist students to develop confidence in their mathematical abilities and try to help relieve math anxiety. I graduated with a Bachelors of Music in Violin Performance, with Honors in Mathematics (essentially a double major in those two respective fields) in 2017, and continued on to focus more on the Mathematics side at Middle Tennessee State University. There, I focused primarily on abstract algebra and algebraic number theory, and I also continued my path towards teaching as both a tutor and a teaching assistant.
